Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra perform five concerts at Southbank Centre in their new 2008/09 season, performing great Classical works with some of today's leading musicians. In January, the Orchestra celebrates the form and development of the symphony, with two works by Haydn and Mahler. In February, Pinchas Zukerman is both conductor and soloist in Beethoven's Violin Concerto, in a programme that includes music from Dvorak and Weber. The Orchestra perform arguably two of the world's most popular symphonic works in March, and pianist Martha Argerich joins the Orchestra in April to perform Prokofiev's third Piano Concerto. The last concert in the season, in May, sees Leonard Slatkin lead the orchestra in a programme featuring Gershwin's jazz-inspired Rhapsody in Blue, which is given distinctive treatment by the dynamic pianists, the Labeque sisters.
