Trilok Gurtu & Arke String Quartet

Saturday 21 February 2009, 7.30pm

Genre-defying master percussionist Trilok Gurtu presents his most recent chamber collaboration, with Italy's Arke String Quartet. Gurtu has been called 'the serial collaborator' by BBC Radio 3 and has worked with artists as diverse as Jan Garbarek, Salif Keita, Nitin Sawhney, Sting, Annie Lennox and Pat Metheny. The Arke String Quartet also defy convention, with a double-bass taking the place of the traditional cello, and electronic amplification used to enhance their natural sound. Here they perform music from their critically acclaimed CD Arkeology.

'[The Arke String Quartet's] accomplished players mesh and weave in the best 20th-century manner, and violinist Valentino Corvino is a passionate soloist. Their tunes imply Indian, Balkan and Celtic rhythms, in time signatures that suit Gurtu down to the last demi-semiquaver' (Guardian).
