Robert Schumann String Quartet in A minor, Op.41 No.1

Schumann, who appears in each of the Takacs Quartet's concerts this season, was never a musician to do things by halves. In a frenzy of activity as a 32-year-old, he composed his first three string quartets Op.41 in as many months, having 'inhaled', as he put it, the music of the great Viennese composers before him - such as Haydn, whose Op.76 No.3 opens the evening. This is followed by the UK premiere of a new work from the fertile pen of Wolfgang Rihm, one of the European new music scene's most admired composers.
