Philharmonia Orchestra
Resident at Southbank Centre
There’s no mistaking the big news for the Philharmonia Orchestra this season: Esa-Pekka Salonen’s opening season as the Philharmonia’s Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor. Initial projects include Stravinsky’s extraordinary Oedipus Rex and Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique. Other autumn highlights include Christoph von Dohnányi’s first performances in his new role of Honorary Conductor for Life, Sir Charles Mackerras conducting Alfred Brendel’s final London concert, and performances marking the Messiaen and Vaughan Williams anniversary celebrations.
In February 2009 the Orchestra opens Esa-Pekka Salonen’s 18-month exploration of the music and culture of Vienna from 1900-35, starting with Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder. Other spring highlights include three concerts conducted by Lorin Maazel celebrating the 50th anniversary of his fi rst performances with the Orchestra.
Many other distinguished artists rejoin the Orchestra throughout the season, including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Boris Berezovsky, Gustavo Dudamel, Charles Dutoit, Janine Jansen, Sergey Khachatryan, Vadim Repin and Simon Trpceski. Haydn and Mendelssohn anniversary tributes complete the season with a pair of concerts with Andras Schiff.
